ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has officially suspended commercial trade activities across its vital border corridors with Iran, halting operations at both the Gabd-Rimdan and Taftan crossings with immediate effect.

The sudden restriction has triggered an immediate slowdown in cross-border movement, leaving numerous commercial trucks and shipping containers stranded on both sides of the frontier. While passenger traffic through the terminals remains largely operational, the complete halt to commercial transit highlights ongoing security sensitivities along the shared border.

Local authorities and regional administrators in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province confirmed that the measure was implemented as a temporary precaution to strengthen border management protocols and facilitate ongoing counterterrorism evaluations. Officials emphasized that regional security and the protection of trade routes remain paramount, noting that commercial activity will resume once robust security measures and comprehensive reviews are successfully completed.

The suspension heavily impacts two of the most critical commercial arteries connecting South Asia to the Middle East. The Taftan border crossing in the Chagai district and the Gabd-Rimdan crossing in Gwadar serve as major lifelines for bilateral commerce, facilitating the exchange of essential food items, petroleum products, and manufactured goods. The closure has created immediate logistical challenges for traders and transport companies who rely on these corridors for steady cross-border movement.

Iranian transit authorities acknowledged the disruption, confirming that commercial operations at the Rimdan-Gabd terminal were halted following communications from Pakistani counterparts. Representatives from Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization noted that while freight movement is currently paused, diplomatic and high-level administrative channels between Tehran and Islamabad remain active to resolve the bottlenecks.

Economic analysts point out that bilateral trade between Islamabad and Tehran holds immense strategic value, particularly for border communities whose livelihoods depend heavily on cross-border commerce. Both nations have previously invested significantly in modernizing checkpoint infrastructure, upgrading scanning facilities, and establishing joint security frameworks to curb illicit smuggling while promoting formal trade.

As business chambers on both sides call for a swift resolution, traders await further directives from customs and security officials. Stakeholders remain hopeful that once the comprehensive security evaluations in Balochistan conclude, normal commercial traffic will be restored across the Gabd-Rimdan and Taftan corridors, easing the backlog of stranded freight and revitalizing regional economic exchange.
