ISLAMABAD — Reinforcing its commitment to global environmental resilience, Pakistan is preparing to host a high-level international conference focusing on the integration of space and geospatial technologies into climate action and disaster mitigation. The landmark event aims to unite global scientific communities, policymakers, and space agencies to combat escalating ecological challenges.

The upcoming international forum—officially designated as the International Conference on Leveraging Space Technology for Early Warning for All (EW4All), Climate Actions and Disaster Risk Assessment—is scheduled to take place in Islamabad. Hosted by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on behalf of the national government, the multi-day event is co-sponsored by prominent international bodies including the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) through UN-SPIDER, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology (ISNET).

Shifting From Reactive Response to Proactive Resilience

With climate change accelerating the frequency and severity of extreme weather events worldwide, the conference will place heavy emphasis on transforming disaster management strategies. Organizers stress that the global community must transition away from traditional, reactive emergency responses and instead adopt proactive, data-driven preparedness frameworks.

The conference program is structured around critical thematic areas, highlighting the United Nations' "Early Warning for All" (EW4All) initiative. Technical sessions will explore how satellite remote sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and advanced satellite communications can be effectively harnessed to monitor environmental indicators, anticipate natural calamities, and protect vulnerable populations.

Key Focus Areas and Global Collaboration

The strategic forum is projected to draw approximately 200 delegates in person, bringing together international technical experts, researchers, diplomats, and representatives from UN agencies and the broader space industry. Discussions will center on several pivotal pillars:

  • Climate Action and Resource Security: Harnessing satellite data to monitor key sectors such as water management, sustainable agriculture, and forestry.

  • Framework Alignment: Assessing national and global progress toward the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action).

  • Advanced Technological Tools: Exploring cutting-edge applications, including GeoAI and digital twins for urban emergency response and hazard modeling.

In addition to high-level plenary panels and technical paper presentations, the itinerary includes specialized capacity-building initiatives and hands-on technical training sessions. Participants will also undertake institutional visits to key Pakistani scientific bodies—including SUPARCO, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)—to observe localized disaster monitoring infrastructure firsthand.

Strengthening Pakistan’s Role in Space Diplomacy

Hosting this prestigious event marks a significant milestone for Pakistan, underscoring its active participation in international space diplomacy and environmental stewardship. As developing nations bear a disproportionate burden of climate-induced vulnerabilities, government and UN officials hope the conference will foster robust cross-border partnerships, facilitate technology
