ISLAMABAD — In a much-needed respite for citizens grappling with high inflation, the federal government has officially announced a downward revision in the prices of petroleum products. According to the latest notification issued by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the cost of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) has been slashed following a downward trend in global market rates.
Under the newly approved rates, the price of petrol (Super) has been reduced by Rs5.16 per litre, bringing its new ex-depot price down from Rs386.30 to Rs381.14 per litre. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel—which heavily impacts the transport, agriculture, and logistics sectors—witnessed an even steeper cut of Rs7.69 per litre. Its price has dropped from Rs396.96 to Rs389.27 per litre. The revised prices have gone into immediate effect.
Global Trends and Pricing Mechanism
The Petroleum Division, in its official press statement, attributed the latest price adjustments to developments in the international energy market. Fluctuations in Platts benchmarks, refined product premiums, and incidental charges over the preceding fortnightly cycle allowed for the downward revision under the government's standard petroleum pricing formula.
Because Pakistan relies heavily on imported fuel, local rates typically mirror movements in international crude and refined product markets, compounded by exchange rate variations. Industry experts note that the relief comes at an opportune time, easing cost pressures across various supply chains.
Targeted Relief Measures for Motorists
Alongside general market adjustments, the government has emphasized targeted assistance to protect vulnerable commuters from high transportation costs. Under the ongoing Petrol Relief Scheme, specific segments of vehicle owners qualify for deeper price concessions.
Motorcycle and Rickshaw Owners: Eligible for a Rs100 per litre discount on a monthly quota of up to 20 litres of petrol.
Small Vehicle Owners: Owners of cars with engine capacities up to 800cc can claim discounted fuel for up to 30 litres per month.
To streamline access, beneficiaries can utilize a simple SMS token verification system. Applicants send a text message containing "TOK" to 9771 to receive a digital token number, which is then presented at designated retail fuel outlets to claim the subsidized rates.
Economic Implications
Economists expect the reduction in high-speed diesel prices to have a cascading, positive effect on the broader economy. Because diesel is the primary fuel powering freight trucks, agricultural tractors, and industrial generators, lower transport costs could help stabilize the prices of essential commodities and food items in the coming weeks.
The new rates will remain applicable for the current fortnightly monitoring period, with OGRA and the Ministry of Energy continuing to monitor global petroleum trends closely.
