KARACHI — The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) experienced another bearish session, extending a cautious trend as selling pressure across key index-heavy sectors dragged the benchmark KSE-100 index into negative territory. Market participants adopted a defensive posture, resulting in a gradual erosion of values across major blue-chip equities and pushing the broader market indices down.

According to market summary reports released by the exchange, the benchmark KSE-100 index slipped by 347.97 points, representing a decline of 0.21%, to close at 164,776.44 points compared to the previous session's close. Throughout the trading day, the index fluctuated within a narrow band, touching an intraday high of 166,070.47 and a low of 164,773.66, reflecting underlying hesitation among institutional and retail investors.

Trading activity remained moderate in the ready market as overall turnover and traded values reflected cautious portfolio realignments. Market capitalization contracted slightly, settling at approximately Rs18.325 trillion as profit-taking and cautious sentiment overshadowed selective buying in secondary scrips. Sector-wise, prominent heavyweights across commercial banking, oil and gas exploration, and cement manufacturing faced downward pressures, contributing significantly to the day's losses.

Market analysts point out that current investor behavior is being dictated by a combination of domestic economic adjustments, corporate earnings expectations, and external macroeconomic indicators. While fundamental valuations in select sectors remain attractive, short-term volatility and profit-taking continue to cap aggressive bullish rallies. Institutional investors are closely monitoring upcoming corporate payout announcements, inflation metrics, and policy rate trajectories before committing fresh capital.

Despite the prevailing cautious sentiment, activity remained vibrant in secondary tier shares and selected growth stocks. Market participants expect consolidation to persist in the near term as the bourse digests recent economic data and awaits clearer directional signals from both local financial regulators and global commodity markets.
