WASHINGTON — India is projected to surpass Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in 2027, according to updated economic forecasts released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The latest multilateral data highlights a striking divergence in economic trajectories between the two Asian nations. While India continues to harness robust domestic demand, expanding industrial output, and strong post-pandemic growth momentum, Japan faces structural headwinds, including a rapidly aging demographic and persistent currency depreciation.

According to the IMF projections, India's nominal GDP is expected to climb to approximately $4.52 trillion by 2027. This milestone follows the fund's endorsement of India's revised GDP calculation methodology, which utilizes updated financial year metrics and enhanced statistical baselines. Meanwhile, the IMF's outlook places Japan's nominal GDP behind both India and the United Kingdom that same year, shifting Tokyo down to sixth place in global economic rankings.

International financial institutions have expressed growing confidence in New Delhi's economic fundamentals. Earlier in the week, the IMF revised its growth forecast for India's economy to 7% for the current fiscal cycle, underscoring the country's resilience amidst global economic uncertainties and regional headwinds. Economists note that India's large and young workforce, coupled with sustained capital investments in infrastructure and technology, continues to fuel exceptional medium-term output.

In contrast, Japan has grappled with the dual pressures of sluggish domestic consumption and a softening yen against the U.S. dollar, which has escalated the costs of energy and raw material imports. Although Japanese industries are actively capitalizing on artificial intelligence and automation investments, overall economic expansion remains subdued compared to emerging market giants.

The shifting global league table reflects a broader realignment of economic power toward South Asia. As India continues on its path toward a $4.52 trillion economy, analysts emphasize that maintaining structural reforms, fiscal discipline, and expanding private-sector investments will be crucial for the nation to sustain its upward momentum and achieve long-term prosperity on the world stage.
