LAHORE — In response to continuing downpours, rising river levels, and severe flood warnings issued across the region, the Punjab government has officially enforced Section 144 across the entire province.

The emergency measure, announced by the provincial home department, is designed to curb preventable risks and protect public safety as vulnerable communities brace for potential flash floods and water accumulation hazards. Provincial authorities emphasized that the restrictions are a necessary precautionary step to mitigate loss of life and property damage amid erratic weather patterns.

Under the newly instituted directives, strict prohibitions have been placed on activities that spike during heavy downpours. The government has banned swimming, unauthorized boating, and bathing in rivers, canals, lakes, and rainwater accumulation ponds. Officials noted that children and young adults frequently gather around swollen water bodies during monsoon spells, creating dangerous situations that emergency responders are keen to prevent. Furthermore, public gatherings, unauthorized rallies, and unnecessary crowd formations in open areas have been restricted to maintain smooth disaster-relief operations and secure public safety.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has been on high alert, continuously monitoring weather metrics and water discharge levels across major rivers, including the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlex, alongside vulnerable hill torrents in the southern districts. Recent reports from disaster management cells indicate that cumulative monsoon spells have already triggered infrastructure strains, damaged houses, and disrupted routine daily life in several districts. Rescue services and civil defense units have been directed to remain stationed at high-risk points, equipped with necessary water-rescue gear and heavy machinery to facilitate swift evacuations if situations deteriorate further.

District administrations across all divisions have been instructed to enforce the Section 144 orders stringently without exception. Law enforcement agencies have been authorized to take immediate legal action against violators, including those defying swimming bans or organizing unapproved assemblies near waterways.

Meanwhile, meteorological departments forecast intermittent rain-wind thunderstorms to persist across upper and central parts of the province over the coming days. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate fully with emergency instructions, avoid unnecessary travel near flood-prone areas, and keep emergency contacts handy to ensure community safety throughout the prevailing weather crisis.
